SCDXC Annual Awards



The Southern California DX Club annually presents two major awards to members: DXer of the Year and the Clipperton Award.

Nominations for DXer of the Year and submissions for the Clipperton Award should be sent to the secretary for presentation to the board no later than the January meeting of each year.



DXer of the Year
[DXer Plaque] The DXer of the Year award is presented at the annual International DX Convention in Visalia, CA. The purpose of the award is to promote better and more DX activity among club members, to provide an incentive for better operating practices and to increase participation in club activities.

Although the award is given each year, the recipient can only earn the award once. Nominations may be made by holders of DXCC or WAZ in Southern California who are also club members. Applications are to be submitted to the board of directors who shall consider each nomination, giving full attention to the following:
  1. Operating ethics and courtesy.
  2. Station activity.
  3. Signal quality.
  4. Observance of FCC rules.
  5. Contribution to the club. Participation in club activities, contests, Newsletter contributions.
  6. Contributions to amateur radio: helping new hams or foreign operators in any way.
  7. Attitude toward fellow hams.
  8. Attitude toward the public, including neighbors (TVI).
  9. Perseverance: effort in listening for new countries, obtaining QSLs, striving for DX goals of various sorts, including ferreting out DX information.
  10. Operating ability.
  11. Success expressed as a qualitative ratio of DX worked to the capabilities of the station. In other words, how well an amateur performs with what he has.
  12. Announcements on the club repeater or PacketCluster spots.
  13. Other factors as considered by the board of directors.

Clipperton Award
[Clipperton Plaque] The Clipperton Award, originated by Don Bostrom, N6IC, is given annually at the International DX Convention in recognition of outstanding achievement as the SCDXC Rookie of the Year. The purpose of the award is to stimulate activity by the new club member, to encourage reporting DX and to make the new member known to his fellow club members by his DX pursuits. The rules are:
  1. For the purposes of this award, only confirmed contacts for entities made during any 12 consecutive month period that includes the month in which the "Rookie" applicant first became a Full Member of the SCDXC, shall be shall be considered.
  2. The applicant must submit a list of confirmed entities and proof of contact (QSL Cards or Log Book of the World record) to any SCDXC Board Member and may include any entities confirmed in the process of becoming a Full Member of the SCDXC that are within the selected 12 month window.
  3. Applications for the Clipperton Award must be received by any SCDXC Board Member no later than the first Regular January meeting of the SCDXC following the end of the selected 12 month period (see rule 1).
  4. The "Rookie" applicant having the most confirmed entities and whose application was received by the SCDXC Board during the year, February to the January Application Submittal Deadline date, shall be declared the winner.
  5. The winner will be determined by the SCDXC Board at the first Board meeting following the January Application Submittal Deadline.
  6. The Award winner will be announced and a plaque presented at the next International DX Convention following the January Application submittal deadline.
